MRI of the prostate has dramatically improved the way we diagnose prostate cancer. Previously, blind prostatic biopsy missed significant cancer in up to 30% of cases. Most significant prostate cancers are visible on MRI, which helps greatly in accurately targeting biopsy of the prostate. MRI also helps in providing information about the likely extent and local spread of the disease.
